Tizzy was so considerate and wanted until all was quiet here at the ranch to have this precious litter of three. It was like she checked my calendar and picked the perfect time. We would have liked to have all girls - but Mother Nature gives us what she wants. Tizzy is a good mother, but still likes to keep tabs on the livestock. So it's nurse a little - run outside and see what's going on - then rush back in to check on the puppies.

Lem decided to start the whelping process before we had her pen set up in the family room. She thought under the minature boxwood bushes was just the perfect location. Luckily she had only one healthy puppy before we checked on her and quickly got her to the "proper location". The next three came without a hitch. Lem wasn't fazed by the change and settled into her role as "mom".

Kenda is an experienced no fuss mom. She had a little trouble with this small litter of three. After the pain of the delivering 3 very large puppies was over - Kenda's maternal instincts kicked in and everyone is happy. She's pretty laid back and not much bothers her so raising this litter will be a breeze.

It took Opal 3 + years to finally decide she would try motherhood. This will be Kenda's last litter. Females are born with all their eggs and apparently Kenda doesn't have too many. The small litters are hard to detect the exact whelping date and this one was born in the paddock's large insulated dog house. She's a great mother and I will miss her - good news she's going to a good friend of mine. Aah summers in the Colorado Mountains and winter in Weatherford, Texas..... what a life!

Lem gave us the best Christmas present ever, a wonderful litter of 5 tri colored puppies. She was very considerate waiting until after we'd had our Christmas dinner - much better than watching the reruns or specials on TV. Lem being an old hand at this "Mommy" role settled right in and took over. Mom and puppies are enjoying the holiday season.

Notice how the puppy's coloring changes from birth to 7 weeks. The transformation continues until about 9 months of age.

Mid January Keeter looked pregnant - but she kept getting bigger and bigger - we couldn't understand how she could move. Well rolling over and jumping over things were a bit difficult - but otherwise she was very content enjoying all the extra attention. We had her x-rayed and the vet said she may have difficultly delivering all of them. So when labor began and she had the first one w/o problems we sighed a little - but the second puppy didn't come and didn't come - so off to the vet - the second puppy was born in route. The delivery room and assistance were waiting for our arrival and with everyone's help Keeter delivered the remaining puppies without a c-section. For a first time mom she did great! We're helping her keep everyone clean and fed.

Veta is an experience mother who had taken a year off between litters. She takes whelping seriously and so when she started labor we weren't very worried. After having the first 5 puppies who were very large and she had needed my assistance, we felt it was time to have the vet take over. They determined she was in distress and a c-section was required. It is unknown if the puppies will be red headed tris like their dad or black headed tris like mom. We're just glad mom and this nicely marked litter are healthy and doing fine.

Shelby's second experience of motherhood went much smoother than her first. She produced all puppies without a c-section and her 4 red/white babies are strong and active. There's 3 other mother's in the house right now and Shelby is a little overwhelmed with all the puppy sounds and courious on lookers.
